This October, the seaside town of Penguin proudly celebrates 150 years since its founding – a milestone that honours its rich past and vibrant present.

From its beginnings as a rugged coastal settlement in the 1870s, Penguin has grown into one of Tasmania’s most charming and welcoming communities. Once known for its timber and shipping industries, the town has evolved into a hub for coastal walks, local produce, and relaxed seaside living – all watched over by the heritage-listed Big Penguin, who has stood proudly on the foreshore since 1975.

To mark the anniversary, the community will come together for a Foreshore Street Party on Saturday 25 October, transforming the main street and waterfront into a festive celebration of all things Penguin. Expect live music, delicious food stalls, historical displays, children’s entertainment, local arts and crafts, and community performances throughout the day. It’s a chance to share memories, reconnect with old friends, and celebrate everything that makes Penguin unique.

While you’re here, take time to explore what our town has to offer. Wander along the Penguin Foreshore Walk, discover the town’s historic landmarks, or visit nearby attractions such as the Dial Range walking tracks and Penguin Mountain lookout. The Penguin Market, Tasmania’s largest undercover market, showcases local crafts and produce every Sunday, while the heritage-listed cemetery offers a window into the town’s early days.
